Old Galaxies at High Redshift and the Cosmological Constant

چکیده

In a recent striking discovery, Dunlop et al [1] observed a galaxy at redshift z=1.55 with an estimated age of 3.5 Gyr. This is incompatible with age estimates for a flat matter dominated universe unless the Hubble constant is less than 45kmsMpc. While both an open universe, and a universe with a cosmological constant alleviate this problem, I argue here that this result favors a non-zero cosmological constant, especially when considered in light of other cosmological constraints. In the first place, for the favored range of matter densities, this constraint is more stringent than the globular cluster age constraint, which already favors a non-zero cosmological constant. Moreover, the age-redshift relation for redshifts of order unity implies that the ratio between the age associated with redshift 1.55 and the present age is also generally larger for a cosmological constant dominated universe than for an open universe. In addition, structure formation is generally suppressed in low density cosmologies, arguing against early galaxy formation. The additional constraints imposed by the new observation on the parameter space of h vs Ωmatter (where H = 100hkms Mpc) are derived for both cosmologies. For a cosmological constant dominated universe this constraint is consistent with the range allowed by other cosmological constraints, which also favor a non-zero value [2].

Constraining the cosmic equation of state from old galaxies at high redshift

New limits on the cosmic equation of state are derived from age measurements of three recently reported old high redshift galaxies (OHRG). The results are based on a flat FRW type cosmological model driven by nonrelativistic matter plus a smooth component parametrized by its equation of state px = ωρx (ω ≥ −1). The range of ω is strongly dependent on the matter density parameter. For ΩM ∼ 0.3, ...

We present the detection of a filament of Lyα emitting galaxies in front of the quasar Q1205-30 at z=3.04 based on deep narrow band imaging and follow-up spectroscopy obtained at the ESO NTT and VLT. We argue that Lyα selection of high redshift galaxies with relatively modest amounts of observing time allows the detection and redshift measurement of galaxies with sufficiently high space densiti...

Formation of Galactic Bulges

We use cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to investigate formation of galactic bulges within the framework of hierarchical clustering in a representative CDM cosmological model. We show that largest objects forming at cosmological redshifts z ∼ 4 resemble observed bulges of spiral galaxies or moderate size ellipticals in their general properties like sizes, shapes, and density profiles. This...

Wavelength and Redshift Dependence of Bulge/Total Light Ratios in Galaxies

HST has opened the possibility to decompose the surface brightness profiles of galaxies up to significant redshifts and look-back times into r− bulge and exponential disk components. This should allow to study the redshift evolution of bulge and disk luminosity contributions and discriminate between the different formation scenarios for these galaxy components currently discussed, i.e. decide i...

Quantum model of homogeneous and isotropic universe predicts logarithmic-law dependence of coordinate distance to source on redshift z which is in good agreement with type Ia supernovae and radio galaxies observations for the redshift range z = 0.01 − 1.8. Comparison with phenomenological models with dark energy in the form of cosmological constant and without dark energy component is made. Flu...
